Identity Completed in Christ

“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst…” John 4:13–14

In John 4, we meet the Samaritan woman at the well. Her story is simple, but it hits something deep. Jesus tells her she’s had five husbands, and the man she’s with now isn’t her husband. That’s six relationships. Six attempts to find something she still didn’t have.

She kept coming back to the well. Not only in the natural to get water for the day, but also in the spiritual.

Still thirsty. Still searching.

In Scripture, six often represents human effort; trying, striving, but never quite reaching fullness. And that’s what her life looked like. Always looking for something to satisfy her, but never finding it.

Then she meets Jesus.

When He reveals Himself to her as the Messiah, everything shifts. What she couldn’t find in all those attempts, she finds in one encounter with Him. That is the point. Our identity was never meant to come from people, approval, or our past. It’s meant to be found in Christ. Glory to God!

The New Testament says this over and over: in Christ. That’s where everything changes, when you are in Him! We are forgiven in Him. Made new in Him. Accepted in Him. Complete in Him! This isn’t just a nice idea; it changes how we live. The Samaritan woman didn’t stay the same. She went from hiding to telling others. From shame to purpose. The reason there was no one else at the well at that time was because she wasn’t accepted by the other women from the village. What looked like a curse became her access to a blessing.

And it leads straight into worship.

Jesus tells her that true worshipers worship in spirit and in truth. When you actually see who He is, and who you are because of Him, worship becomes natural. Not just singing, but how you live. Letting go of the things you used to depend on, and putting Him at the center. That’s the shift. From striving to surrender. From trying to figure yourself out, to living from who you already are in Christ.

The woman left the well different. Not fixed by effort, but changed by encounter. The water Jesus gives doesn’t run out. It’s available to anyone who is thirsty. When your eyes are opened to this reality, you realize Jesus is more than enough. Romans 11:33 shares, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” We will never get to the end of the revelation of the beauty of Jesus Christ.

The invitation still stands today. That is great news! The offer is still on the table. May we remain thirsty for this precious Living Water. Stop searching in the same places. Come to Him. In Him, you’re not lacking anything; you are complete.
